Archbishop
Chapelle High School
was founded in 1962 by the Archdiocese
of New Orleans and named after Archbishop Placide Louis
Chapelle, the first Archbishop of New Orleans in the
twentieth century.
The
school was staffed by the Congregation of the Sisters of
Charity of the Incarnate Word. There were 236 freshmen
and nine teachers, including five religious and four lay
teachers, that first year. Each year, an additional grade
was added until the 1965-1966 school year, which heralded
the first graduating class. Today, Chapelle is a Catholic
college preparatory school of over one thousand young women
in grades eight through twelve. Students come from all
over the New Orleans metropolitan area, Northshore and
River Parishes for Chapelle's nationally renowned education,
outstanding faculty, advanced technology and safe and convenient
location on Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie.
Archbishop
Chapelle is one of only five schools in the country and
the only high school in Louisiana to be named a Blue Ribbon
School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education
three times. It is no surprise that Today's Catholic
Teacher Magazine recently named Chapelle as one of
the 25 Most Innovative Catholic Schools in the country.
